Travel: Wellington’s Chinese New Year Lantern Festival

Travel: Wellington's Chinese New Year Lantern Festival

Wellington’s annual Chinese New Year Festival went ahead in early 2020 despite the paranoia (some of it very warranted) about COVID-19. Wellington’s waterfront became a sea of dancing colours on the water with with luminous koi fish, the expected red dragons dancing as well as more traditionally Kiwi symbolism which was certainly nice to see. This included Māori wahine having a hongi and underneath of the eaves of a marae. The night was really beautiful and the atmosphere was buzzing and bustling. It was one of those rare Wellington evenings where there was virtually no wind at all and all was peaceful, balmy and summery. The vibrant colours of the lanterns against the changing, glittering city skyline, mountainscape and ocean made this quite a magical occasion to remember!

  1. This looked like a wonderful display of Wellington’s Chinese New Year festival. Lovely to hear of the Kiwi symbolism. It looked like a good turnout too – probably because it was a good weather day, Here in Melbourne, Australia we have Chinese New Year celebrations each year, lion dances and all usually for about a week in the city and outer areas. It’s interesting to see how people always stop to watch the celebrations and there usually ends up being a crowd.

    1. Yeah there’s always a good turn out for Chinese New Year in Wellington and looks beautiful seeing the harbor all lit up. The Māori/Chinese cross-cultural thing is nice. When I used to live in Auckland, they had the celebration in amongst a park and it was also good. I love seeing all of the lanterns and performances. Happy year of the dragon 🐉 🐲 apparently it is a good year to be creative https://www.thechinesezodiac.org/year-of-the-dragon/

      1. That is lovely to hear that there are celebrations too in Auckland. The world is so globalised these days, and Chinese New Year celebrations are so common all around the world. Such a wonderful thing. Let’s see what the Year of the Dragon has in store. Maybe it will indeed be good for creativity 😊
