Despite all of the media beat-up around Corona Virus, the Lantern Festival to celebrate Chinese New Year went ahead on Wellington’s waterfront the other night. It was really beautiful, bustling full of people and one of those sacred and special Wellington evenings where there was virtually no wind and all was peaceful, balmy and summery. It was nice to see some Maori lanterns in Wellington’s festival like this beautiful one with two little girls doing a hongi under the marae carvings. I just loved it. Also the gigantic fish which to my mind looked a bit Japanese, were also very special. The vibrant colours of the lanterns against the changing, glittering city skyline, mountains and ocean made this festival highly photogenic.
