Auckland’s Hidden Culinary Heaven: Bowl & Arrow and Farro (Orakei Bay Village)

Auckland's Hidden Culinary Heaven: Bowl & Arrow and Farro (Orakei Bay Village)

Orakei Bay Village is a boutique block of specialty shops, fancy eateries, breweries and wine cellars (because Kiwi’s do like a drink or two).

A Kiwi tradition or perhaps Auckland tradition (which I think is amazing) seems to be that each suburb has a burrowed away and hidden block of shops, where local businesses and traditional sellers sell their wares. This grouping of shops is typically hyperlocal and will be proudly almost possessively so. Often in this hub, theres a pub and a few cafes involved and a local ‘milk bar’ or as they would call it here a Dairy. When the combination of shops is done right, there’s a constant flow of people coming in and out of the local village shops.

The latest Auckland development of this kind is Orakei Bay Village. They have planned and calculated the combination of shops well here as the place is always teeming with people.

This high-end block of shops was developed on disused old factories and abandoned old warehouses which had a slightly menacing and haunted feel up until now.

Orakei Bay Village

The Orakei Bay Village features shops home furnishings that look awfully expensive, a wine cellars, a pub/brewery Brothers Beer, a boutique supermarket called Farro, a paleo breakfast place called Bowl & Arrow, a florist named Botanicals, and a soon-to-open sprawling cafe that does breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Orakei Bay Village sits nestled in the confluence between two lagoon-like lakes filled with water fowl, a train station and a long wooden walking/cycling path, with the city skyline and the beach in the background. It’s a stunning location and a suburb that I scouted out for ages in search for the perfect rental place.

Anyway I’ve digressed. I’m here today to talk about the food. This new little local hub has provided me with a wealth of beautifully made and elegantly packaged foodstuffs all within stumbling distance of my house.

I can’t bear to part with my money on the eye-wateringly expensive home furnishings ($300 for a duvet cover, ffs!) or the $70 bunch of flowers (for me, that’s frivolous) but give me a $15 paleo breakfast bowl each day and I’ll be as happy as larry. Give me some beautifully concocted alcohol ginger ale, made locally or a home make biscuit and I’m there with my wallet open.

Bowl & Arrow have upped the game for Auckland’s brunch offerings. These smoothie bowls are fuelled with antioxidants, a good dose of your day’s nutrients and organic (when possible) ingredients. They come in gorgeously decorated bowls with edible flowers, bubbly and crunchy bits and bobs (nuts, seeds and so forth) and they are mostly gluten free and free of dairy and sugar. They come with blended fruit, vegies and nuts and are served with a smile. I have become utterly smitten by this place.

Farro Supermarket

New Zealand has some ‘mean as’ bakery standards. What I’m saying is that bakeries here produce some pretty outstanding cakes, tarts and pies. Here below we have a little international beauty. The Smore is something that Americans will be familiar with. It’s traditionally a two pieces of biscuit with a marshmallow and some chocolate slabbed in between and then toasted on an open fire. This version of the Smore is rather fancier and more elaborate. It’s a pimped up version with a home made gigantic marshmallow that’s pre-toasted, on a chocolate biscuit tart base and a delectable chocolate filling. It tastes as exquisite as it looks.

Smore tart from Farro

Also from Faro, a selection of amazing ginger ales and ciders which are crafted with the utmost care and which elicit a flavour bomb in the mouth. Also highly recommended from the Deli in Farro, their freshly made and flavoursome sushi for a quick lunch on the go.
