The Boy and I went to one of our favourite haunts in Auckland, the endearingly named Miss Clawdys. A southern American style tapas joint nestled within a group of vibrant dockside restaurants and bars in Auckland CBD. After the meal we basked in the wavering neon lights and the large full moon (in Scorpio) that lingered behind the clouds.
It’s our second sunday in a row in this funky little place, if you ever do come to Auckland then Miss Clawdy should be on your radar. As we have a tendency to do, we overkill on the menu options each time we go there and in an attempt to find the best combination of food and drink for all posterity.
So here’s my hit-list of delectable delights at Miss Clawdy, Auckland.
Cherry Lemonade: Really racy, boozy and alcoholic – it’s chocas with vodka and bitters and has lemonade distilled ice-cubes and sour maraschino cherries in it – a revelation.
Fried Jerk Chicken: Little itty bitty pieces of chicken in a citrus-sweet, crunchy and spicy coating, this is the way fried chicken it’s supposed to taste. There’s also a pungent cheddar sauce that goes perfectly with it. There’s no going back to crappy take-aways from KFC ever.
Southern Fried Calamari Po’Boy: Comes with shredded iceberg lettuce and chipotle lime mayo. This combines all of the big and brash flavours of southern style food and it’s the perfect lunch option or any time option. In case you’re wondering, a po’boy is a decent-sized roll with fillings, like a sub.
Fried Banana with Vanilla Bean Ice-cream: along with dried banana chips, mango and chilli dressing: Words failed me when I ate this. Not normally a dessert person, I was literally blinded, had an orgasm and fell over in the gutter simultaneously when I ate this.
Here’s the obligatory shot of me looking soulfully into the middle distance…
